5GASP: Fire Detection and ground assistance using drones

Home » 5GASP: Fire Detection and ground assistance using drones

Wildfires are one of the costliest and deadliest natural disasters worldwide, especially in the Mediterranean region. The immediate impacts include damage to millions of hectares of forest resources, evacuation of thousands of people, burning of homes, devastation of infrastructure, and, most importantly, threatening the lives of people.

This network application gives teams the first assessment of buildings and forests that are on fire. The Network Application is onboarded to an air drone as a cloud-native application with services on the Edge, ensuring low latency. Telemetry, as well as information from infrared sensors, speakers, conventional video and thermal vision, are transmitted to the 5G System and from there to the teams on the ground. The Network Application handles the drone's live image streaming and processing and allows the teams on the ground to adjust the altitude at which the flyover takes place according to the height of the flames. Apart from the service creation time, there will also be a handover between 5G stations.
