Verticals Cartography

This Verticals Cartography tracks the progress of Europe’s 5G Public Private Partnership (5G PPP) in developing 5G technology enablers and applications across diverse market segments through a large set of use cases, spanning proofs of concept, prototypes, demonstrations, trials and pilots to give consumers and vertical end-users tangible examples of 5G usage. Launched in September 2018, the Cartography is designed as a sustainable resource across Europe and globally, with regular reports on updates and impacts of 5G use cases within the 5G PPP. These are available for June 2019, March 2020 and September 2020.

Annual showcase brochures of successful mature use cases stem from the competitions coordinated within the 5G-IA Trials Working Group. Four such brochures are available: 5G Infrastructure PPP - Trials and Pilots published in September 2019, December 2020August 2021 and November 2023. Each year, the top ten trials and pilots are selected by WG Panel Members based on pre-defined evaluation criteria.

How to use the 5G PPP verticals cartography:

To view the many examples available, click on industry vertical, country locations, type of use case experiment and functionalities defined by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU): Enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB), Massive Machine Type Communications (mMTC), and Ultra Reliable Low Latency Communications (URLLC), as well as 5G technical Key Performance Indicators achieved within the 5G PPP.

This cartography contains a vertical mapping of 5G R&D projects, encompassing trials, pilots and use cases carried out within the framework of the 5G PPP initiative. A total of 353 use cases have been collected, engaging 66 5G PPP projects targeting different vertical sectors. For a graphical representation on the geographical distribution of the different use cases check the map at this link. Also, for any questions about the Verticals Cartography contact c.demajo@trust-itservices.com and/or m.giuffrida@trust-itservices.com

A new version of this vertical cartography will be promoted within the Vertical Engagement Tracker, which is sponsored by the Smart Networks and Services Joint Undertaking (SNS JU) initiative. Stay tuned for future developments!

Finally, also make sure to check the replicability catalogue, a digital collection of 63 replicable use cases from 15 5GPP projects. This large number of use cases covering most of the verticals will be a very useful catalogue of solutions that could be used by Digital Innovation Hubs (DIHs) and contribute to the acceleration of the transfer to the market. Browse the replicability catalogue at this link and contact pierreyves.danet@6g-ia.eu for further information.

Smart5Grid - Remote Inspection of Automatically Delimited Working Areas at Distribution Level

Remote inspection of automatically delimited working areas at the distribution grid level through the deployment of a private 5G network.

Industry 4.0

EVOLVED-5G - Localisation of a Robot within an industrial environment

The use case overall focuses on leveraging the capabilities of a 5G network with an application that enables the robot to determine to which 5G cell it is connected.

Industry 4.0

EVOLVED-5G - Teleopearion of TIAGo Robot

The use case reflects the functionality of the final prototype of the Network App, which is a teleoperation task where a TIAGo robot needs to perform a pick-and-place task while being teleoperated remotely due to the risks of the environment or of the objects to be manipulated.

Other

EVOLVED-5G - Security measures to handle identity and access management to ensure the robustness of the 5G ecosystem

The use case describes the utilisation of OpenID Connect (OIDC), an identity layer on top of OAuth2.0, which extends the security capabilities.

Other

EVOLVED-5G - SIEM (Security information and event management) with 5G capabilities

FOGUS, with the development of its Network App, aims to bridge the communication gap between SIEM and 5G NPN devices.

Other

EVOLVED-5G - Firewall - IP whitelisting

The use case describes the monitoring of the 5G core through the proper use of suitable APIs.

Industry 4.0

EVOLVED-5G - Anomaly detection in an industrial network

The use case describes a small-scale factory production line that was created and programmed to perform a sequence that simulates a factory operation which requires the coordination of multiple devices to perform a task.

Industry 4.0

EVOLVED-5G - Industrial grade 5G connectivity with assured QoS

The use case contributes to the efficiency of FoF operations through research and development on a Network App which provides industrial 5G connectivity for those IoT and M2M devices, assuring them required QoS with the help of integrated SLA/SLS monitoring capabilities as part of the Network App.

Industry 4.0

EVOLVED-5G - Computer vision software to detect Personal Protective Equipment

The use case employs computer vision software to detect whether or not Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as safety helmets and safety glasses are worn by employees and provides a near real-time warning signal directly to the control room safety officer when any element of PPE equipment is not detected.

Agriculture and Farming

EVOLVED-5G - Smart irrigation 5G Agriculture

The smart irrigation use case reflects the deployment within the fields of a large number of sensors that can measure several parameters of interest, such as the Vapour Pressure Deficit (VPD) or Frequency Domain Reflectometry (FDR), which can be used to monitor the status of the terrain.
