Verticals Cartography

This Verticals Cartography tracks the progress of Europe’s 5G Public Private Partnership (5G PPP) in developing 5G technology enablers and applications across diverse market segments through a large set of use cases, spanning proofs of concept, prototypes, demonstrations, trials and pilots to give consumers and vertical end-users tangible examples of 5G usage. Launched in September 2018, the Cartography is designed as a sustainable resource across Europe and globally, with regular reports on updates and impacts of 5G use cases within the 5G PPP. These are available for June 2019, March 2020 and September 2020.

Annual showcase brochures of successful mature use cases stem from the competitions coordinated within the 5G-IA Trials Working Group. Four such brochures are available: 5G Infrastructure PPP - Trials and Pilots published in September 2019, December 2020August 2021 and November 2023. Each year, the top ten trials and pilots are selected by WG Panel Members based on pre-defined evaluation criteria.

How to use the 5G PPP verticals cartography:

To view the many examples available, click on industry vertical, country locations, type of use case experiment and functionalities defined by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU): Enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB), Massive Machine Type Communications (mMTC), and Ultra Reliable Low Latency Communications (URLLC), as well as 5G technical Key Performance Indicators achieved within the 5G PPP.

This cartography contains a vertical mapping of 5G R&D projects, encompassing trials, pilots and use cases carried out within the framework of the 5G PPP initiative. A total of 353 use cases have been collected, engaging 66 5G PPP projects targeting different vertical sectors. For a graphical representation on the geographical distribution of the different use cases check the map at this link. Also, for any questions about the Verticals Cartography contact c.demajo@trust-itservices.com and/or m.giuffrida@trust-itservices.com

A new version of this vertical cartography will be promoted within the Vertical Engagement Tracker, which is sponsored by the Smart Networks and Services Joint Undertaking (SNS JU) initiative. Stay tuned for future developments!

Finally, also make sure to check the replicability catalogue, a digital collection of 63 replicable use cases from 15 5GPP projects. This large number of use cases covering most of the verticals will be a very useful catalogue of solutions that could be used by Digital Innovation Hubs (DIHs) and contribute to the acceleration of the transfer to the market. EVOLVED-5G - Physical / Digital Repair Twins

The scenario targets the chatbot-assisted maintenance procedures that are being performed in the premises of a factory environment.

EVOLVED-5G - Use of a chatbot application for the maintenance of machines and reporting of malfunctions within a factory

The scenario targets the chatbot-assisted maintenance procedures that are being performed in the premises of a factory environment.

Industry 4.0

EVOLVED-5G - Remote Assistance with AR

The use case is based on the scenario where a local worker within a factory and a remote expert helping the worker can be informed of the different degradations of the network and adapt their behaviour during the remote assistance call. In case of network congestion due to a high number of users entering a given location, the Network Application developed for this purpose can autonomously suggest disabling heavy data transfers such as sending 3D models or their real-time synchronisation between users.

5G INDUCE - Drone assisted network performance and coverage monitoring for industrial infrastructures

Use case targets 5G network performance and coverage monitoring - data collected through monitoring of the 5G network serve as a key factor in a continuous process of network optimisation, thus assuring the required (high) level of QoS and QoE for the industry/business process to run properly.

Automotive

5G INDUCE - VR immersion and AGV control

Through the immersed experience, industrial operators obtain a high-quality interactive view of what is happening in each AGV. Moreover, this use case brings to the industry extra beneficial services such as security or person recognition.

Industry 4.0

5G INDUCE - Smart Indoor Logistics and Work Safety Operations

The increase in accidents inside industrial infrastructures in recent years is a crucial problem for the industrial sector. Collisions involving forklifts and humans due to limited visibility at corridor intersections can be eliminated by utilising real-time movement monitoring in conjunction with a sophisticated collision prediction algorithm.

Energy

5G INDUCE - Inspection (corrosion detection) and surveillance services for critical industrial infrastructures

The effective inspection and surveillance of critical industrial infrastructures is important to prevent accidental or malicious damages. The goal of inspection is to identify early corrosion or mistreatment signs or even critical operation levels (e.g. in storage tanks or pipelines). The purpose of surveillance is to identify unwanted and potentially malicious presence of humans or even animals.

Industry 4.0

5G INDUCE - Autonomous Indoor Fleet Management

Nowadays, AGVs at Ford premises only perform some indoor functions, guided through lines. Specific needs, though have been identified for connectivity and modernisation of the AGVs fleet that would allow optimising some of the processes of the logistics distribution chain for items, among and within the factory's warehouses and between these and the suppliers' warehouses.

Public Safety

INT5GENT - Athens Use Case

PPDR day-to-day operations require on-demand but scheduled provisioning of network coverage and the enablement of mission-critical services even in areas lacking public network coverage. Int5Gent proposes a solution of ad-hoc automatic deployment of 5G access network segments -namely the gNB and the MEC - dedicated to the PPDR sector at a compact server (an edge box as portable IaaS) as an extension of the public network. The solution also includes the deployment/ configuration of the necessary transport network resources based on a resilient mm-Wave mesh transport network. On top of this, quick and automated deployment of reliable PPDR services in this case being drone-based real-time video streaming services using cloud native principles and AI-based edge processing.

INT5GENT - Barcelona Use Case

In this use case, vertical services will offer a view of the physical railway infrastructure state to facilitate the monitoring, maintenance and eventually the safety operation in an easy-to-use tool that could support decision-making.
